Good To Know about Rent a Car In Dubai
We will deliver the car to your desired location. Car rent and the deposit will be done while you are receiving the car.
The new special series Ferrari 488 Pista Spider, which was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (r), has made its European debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. With an incredible weight/power ratio of 1.92 kg/cv, the Prancing Horse introduced the 50th drop-top model.
Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is a combination of the most advanced technological solutions from the race and the joy of driving en Plein air. It delivers an exhilarating ride behind the wheel. In a symbiotic relationship, the driver is one with the car. This ensures instantaneous response to commands and complete control over complex maneuvers. It is not surprising that the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider enjoys the best technological transfer from the track than any road-legal open-top car.
The engine, dynamics, and aerodynamics of the model are derived from two-track cars: 488 Challenge 488 GTB. Ferrari has now won five GT Manufacturers’ titles, including the GT class in the FIA World Endurance Championship 2017. This model clearly shows the benefits of the extensive development work that went into the coupe version, called the 488 Pista.
Ferrari 488 Pista Spider’s V8 engine is the most powerful in Maranello history. It was also awarded the Best Engine title for the third year consecutively at the 2018 International Engine of the Year Awards. With 720 cv, the twin-turbo V8 of 3902cc produces 50 cv more than that of the 488 Spider. The engine also has torque that is calibrated to provide a constant and ever-increasing acceleration. It was also awarded the “Best of the Best” title, which is the highest-ranking engine among all the winners over the past 20 years.
Its performance figures, which include 0-100 km/h acceleration of 2.85 seconds and a lap at Fiorano in just 1’21“, are among the best ever created by the Prancing Horse spiders.
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is designed for the typical Ferrarista, who has other Ferrari spiders. These drivers want to experience all that the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider can do, but also love the freedom of drop-top driving and the incredible engine’s sound.
The innovations go beyond a power boost – they also reduce weight. The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is a Ferrari model that delivers better handling. This is due to numerous innovations in different areas.
ENGINE
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider’s engine is a benchmark in terms of performance and characteristics. It sets the standard not only for turbo engines but also for all engines, even naturally aspirated. It was named “Engine of the year” three times in a row: 2016, 2017, and 2018. It also boasts the highest power output of any V8 Ferrari has ever produced, in terms both of its overall and specific power outputs. It is also the most powerful V8 engine, with a power increase of over 1.4 kW over the model it was derived from, the 488 Spider.
Its exceptional technical performance places it at the top of its class. Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is capable of delivering 720 cv at 8000 rpm, a 50 cv increase over the 488 Spider and 115 more than its previous special edition. The engine’s power output has been increased to a class-leading 185 cv/l. Maximum torque is greater at all engine speeds, peaking in at 770 Nm (11 Nm more than the 488 Spider), and is available starting at 3,000 rpm.
This was possible thanks to the new engine intake layout for the 488 Challenge. The intakes were moved from the flanks towards the rear spoiler area. This allows for a cleaner flow and higher volume of air to the engine which contributes to an increase in power. The rear intakes were moved from the sides to allow for a larger intercooler in front of the rear wheels. This allows for a significantly reduced fluid-dynamic load loss and allows for a cleaner flow of air to reach the engine. It also contributes to an increase in power.
The weight was reduced through the adoption of evolved components like Inconel exhaust manifolds and a lighter crankshaft, flywheel, and titanium con-rods. All these components were developed using F1-derived technology. The engine’s weight was reduced by 18 kg.
The 488 Challenge offers turbos with an integrated rev sensor. Response times are instantaneous and even faster than the 488 Spider, thanks to a new specifically-developed control strategy. Driving on the limit is made easier by a new pedal map.
The engine also received a power boost thanks to specific valves and springs, as well as a new cam profile. Thicker cylinder liners also make the engine more powerful. The new exhaust manifolds‘ geometry completes these significant improvements. The carbon-fiber intake plenums are another signature feature of Ferrari’s special series cars.
To deal with the engine’s increased power, all structural components were modified. To withstand the increased loads, the pistons and heads of the cylinders were strengthened. Parallel to this, special attention was paid to reducing internal friction, such as solutions that were directly derived from Formula 1.
As one would expect from a special series of cars, the engine’s sound is distinctive and unmistakable. The sound quality is actually higher than that of the 488 Spider in all gears and at all engine speeds. This is also easier to appreciate for the coupe version’s occupants because of the retractable hardtop. The improved quality and intensity are due to the new Inconel exhaust manifolds, and the optimized exhaust bypass logic.
These solutions all contribute to the engine’s lower inertia, allowing it to rev faster, so the driver can see that the rev counter needle is flying especially in rapid transitions such as gear shifting or scorching low-gear acceleration.
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider’s engine not only increases power but also makes the car more intuitive to drive and provides powerful, razor-sharp performance for all drivers, regardless of driving conditions.
High-performance features have been added to enable drivers to fully exploit the Ferrari 488 Pista Spyder‘s potential.
The new boost control strategy optimizes the response time and performance of sporty driving on the limit. It makes all the power the driver needs from the throttle almost instantly.
Another step forward in engine performance is the rev limiter’s Wall Effect strategy. Instead of gradually limiting revs towards the limiter it stops at 8,000 rpm. This maximizes the power available for power-on dynamic driving situations.
High-performance gear shifting is a hallmark of thoroughbred race cars and enhances the sporty driving experience. The manettino’s RACE mode offers a new gear shifting strategy that reduces shifting times by 30%.
The highly successful Ferrari Variable Torque Management strategy was also adopted on this model. All torque curves were revised to provide a smooth, powerful acceleration that adapts to the car’s sporty style.
Ferrari 488 Pista Spider was designed to provide high-performance mechanical performance, such as lap times and standing start times. It also offers driving pleasure and accessibility to all drivers.
This V8 special series drop-top V8 car‘s vehicle dynamics offer an unrivaled combination of acceleration, braking efficiency, and steering precision. It also provides a truly immersive driving experience. The Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer, (FDE), makes it easier to control the lateral dynamics when driving in high-performance situations.
Ferrari engineers had to tackle many challenges in order to achieve their goals. They created lightweight solutions, improved the efficiency of brakes, and introduced new Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires.
The Spider has a lateral dynamics control system, which uses Ferrari software to adjust the brake pressure at calipers. When the manettino position is “CT-OFF”, the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer is available. It controls the lateral dynamics parameters and side slip angle estimation. The control system intervenes in the background, lightly activating calipers and exiting corners.
The system controls the evolution of the side slide angle. This makes controlling the lateral dynamics in high-performance situations easier, more controllable, and more predictable. It is not a stability control system but a system that maximizes performance.
Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer was introduced into the SSC 6.0 system to give drivers more confidence and allow them to handle longer oversteer situations with greater ease. Even for less experienced drivers, it makes it easier to control and reach the limit.
Ferrari 488 Pista Spider’s ability to handle rapid changes in direction is exceptional and gives drivers an unparalleled sense of predictability. This improved handling precision is due to the recalibrated SCM–E dampers and 10% stiffer springs. The 488 Spider’s longitudinal acceleration is 13% greater than the 488 Spider.
The 488 Pista Spider was designed for road use but also has impressive track performance. The braking system was modified to increase cooling, especially under extreme conditions, and to reduce the time to heat up.
To enhance the sporty pedal feeling and provide consistent, smooth braking in all conditions, the 488 Challenge’s brake system was chosen. The car’s lighter weight and 200-0 km/h stop distance have resulted in a reduction of one meter from the 488 Spider.
The bodyshell was created to be as light as possible. It features ultralight materials like carbon fiber as the engine cover, front and rear bumpers, and the rear spoiler. Lexan is used for the rear window.
It is the first time that a 20-inch single-piece carbon fiber wheel rim has been offered in the Ferrari range. It is made entirely of carbon fiber and weighs around 20% less than the standard forged wheel rims. The special coating on the channel and spokes, which was developed for aerospace industries, efficiently disperses heat created by braking.
AERODYNAMICS
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider’s aerodynamics was greatly improved by extensive research. The concept was based on innovation and performance, which allowed engineers to develop significant solutions.
The 488 Spider’s already exceptional aerodynamic efficiency has been increased by 20%. This brings significant benefits in terms both of absolute speed and lap times at medium-fast tracks, as well as pure fun behind the wheel.
This significant improvement can be attributed in large part to the radical bodywork and underbody choices that were made with the goal of increasing downforce while reducing drag coefficient.
The 488 Pista Spider actually takes aerodynamic concepts from the 488 Spider and molds them into an even more technical and ambitious package. The active aerodynamics of the rear underbody and a completely revised version of the spoiler (patented on 488 GTB) are just two examples.
The V8 turbo engine of the 488 Pista Spider produces 50 cv more than its car-based counterpart. This is due in part to a 15deg C decrease in temperature in the plenum compared to the 488 Spider. To minimize any impact on aerodynamic performance, the development of thermo-fluid dynamics was primarily focused on powertrain cooling.
The intercooler size would have to be 25% larger than the one on the 488 Spider in order to provide the performance required. Engineers worked hard on the entire car to reduce drag and weight associated with large radiating surfaces. Radiant layout decisions at the front of this car were key to improving intercooler efficiency.
Redesigned the front radiator arrangement. The radiators’ rake has been inverted to face the rear, directing hot air to the underbody before the front wheels. This resulted in a 10% improvement in performance for the rear intercoolers and an additional aerodynamic benefit, the virtual fairing of tyres which reduces the car’s drag by 7%.
The engine air intakes were moved from the flanks, which was the solution on the 488 Spider, to the rear spoiler according to the 488 Challenge. Because of its unique shape, the spoiler provides powerful recompression, which ensures that the engine air intake receives high dynamic pressure. This reduces the length of the inlet pipe, reduces losses, and boosts engine performance.
Because of the need to provide efficient downforce, the entire front of the car was redesigned, including the bumpers as well as the bonnet. The S-Duct is a unique Formula 1-derived solution. The intake air on the front bumper flows through an aerodynamic section with calibrated sections. It exits through the bonnet through a vent, creating downforce above the front axle.
The front intake also features a central lower profile with dual functions. It acts as a splitter, which thanks to its curvature accelerates the flow and increases airflow through the S-Duct. Additionally, it creates a low-pressure zone under the front body, further increasing downforce.
This particular solution is responsible for 18% more downforce than the 488 Spider but only a 2% increase in drag.
Exterior bumper sections ahead of the wheels were also extensively revised with modifications from the 488 Challenge. They are responsible for 23% more downforce than the 488 Spider. The front bumper has radical scoops that allow aerodynamic elements to protrude where they are most effective. To deflect the flow from the wheel arch ahead, the volume of the bumper is recessed. This generates suction from both the wheel arch and the front underbody.
Two elements at the rear contributed to the attainment of the downforce target: The blown spoiler system, and the venting behind the rear wheels.
The spoiler is longer (+40mm) than its counterpart on the 488 Spider. The spoiler’s efficiency was the focus of development. The evolution of the spoiler system has had a significant effect on downforce. It accounted for 25% of the overall increase in downforce compared to the 488 Spider.
The car’s underbody, as with every new Ferrari, was specifically designed to deliver the most efficient downforce figure. The 488 Spider’s main difference is the way the hot air from its radiators is directed to the underbody before the front wheels. This is done to improve the cooling layout and reduce the car’s drag coefficient. However, it shrinks the surface areas that can be used for downforce generation. The designers chose to use other parts of the underbody to compensate and increase downforce.
Front diffusers were added to the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider by changing the angle of the front radiators. This was possible due to the removal of any dams in front of the wheels. The diffusers are able to accelerate the flow and vent it into the wheel arches. This creates strong suction which is responsible for 12% more downforce than the 488 Spider.
The underbody vortex generators have been optimized and generate 10% more downforce thanks to modifications in their profile and length.
Ferrari’s World Endurance Championship experience also inspired the rear diffuser. It has the same double-kink line as the 488 GTE, increasing the extraction and downforce generation capabilities of a traditional diffuser. The diffuser, like the 488 GTB’s, is fitted with 3 active flaps that rotate at a minimum drag of 14 degrees to completely stall the car and reduce drag.
EXTERIOR DESIGN
The Ferrari Design Centre team was guided by aerodynamic requirements. The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider’s form has been carefully sculpted to make them more performance-oriented. However, it was also mindful of Maranello’s trademark styling elements and aesthetic canons.
Designers used innovative elements such as the aerodynamic S–Duct at its front to visually reduce the car’s nose and create a floating wing effect. The prominent aerodynamic underbody motif on the 488 GTE is reflected in the black, omega-shaped edging at the front bumpers as well as the side flicks.
The most notable change on the flanks was the removal of the splitter from the side air intakes for the 488 Spider. The aerodynamic profiles at the front run smoothly along the side miniskirts to the rear diffuser’s side appendages.
The front concept is also reflected in the dolphin-tail rear spoiler, which appears suspended to give the impression of lightness and efficiency. Meanwhile, the rear volumes give the tail a sense power.
Ferrari 488 Pista Spider’s racing livery runs the length of the car. It starts at the front bumper and then dives into the S-Duct, before continuing to the rear spoiler.
COCKPIT
The interior exudes a distinct racing feeling. With the Ferrari cockpit’s trademark precision and craftsmanship, the extensive use of lightweight and exclusive technical materials like carbon-fibre or Alcantara complements the interior perfectly. Contrasting hand-stitching and triangular pattern aluminum tread plates and heel rests, as well as sculpted doors panels, are excellent examples of this.
Two new all-carbon fiber instrument clusters have been added to the driver zone (optional content). The glove compartment, which is normally located in the dashboard in front of the passenger, has been replaced with handy storage pockets on both the rear bench as well as the doors. This has led to a significant visual reduction in the area under the dash.
