Ferrari has just launched a new supercar. It is the Ferrari 296 GTB, a car that has been presented by the Ferrari staff
This new 296 GTB is a completely new plug-in hybrid supercar with a 50 mm shortened wheelbase compared to a Ferrari SF90 Stradale, 830 combined horsepower, and 25 km of 100% electric range for the car with the best power-to-weight ratio in the field. horse range.
Ferrari 296 GTB: tradition and avant-garde without a ZERO label
The Ferrari 296 GTB could be a modified SF90 Stradale, but it is much more than that. The name takes the numerical inspiration related to the engine since the first two numbers represent the displacement and the third the configuration: the first V6 at 120º. On the other hand, GTB refers to Gran Turismo Berlinetta.
It is a more compact sports car than we are used to in the Cavalier brand, as they have sought to contain the dimensions and weight to create a car that is above all fun to drive and that seeks the maximum emotions when driving.
Be careful, it is 50 mm shorter between axles than the last Berlinetta and uses a completely new chassis despite the fact that it shares elements with its older brother. The 296 GTB is therefore the car with the shortest wheelbase of the entire current Ferrari range and 145mm shorter than the SF90 Stradale (4,565mm overall length).
The designers have sought to create equal parts muscle and harmony with elements borrowed from classic models such as the 250 LM and combined with the latest arrowhead designs from the Italian house. In a way, the lines are classic despite the sharp features of the set.
The rear is perhaps the most retro part, with a high and elevated tail combined with a dramatic drop from the roof towards an engine compartment that is practically clean.
Aerodynamics has also been a fundamental point, achieving an aerodynamic load of 360 kg at 250 km / h without using aerodynamic appendages (with the Assetto Fiorano package). It does use solutions such as a hidden spoiler between the taillights or a front splitter with air intake and double lip.
Inside we find the new completely digital interface in a cabin that is of course two-seater, with very sporty cut seats and a steering wheel that brings together a large number of control functions.
Maranello’s second plug-in hybrid is called 296 GTB
The powertrain has been specially created from scratch for this 296 GTB. The block designed from scratch has sought to improve the behavior of the car, so a new six-cylinder architecture has been created open at 120º and that encloses the forced turbo intake system inside. It is the first Ferrari engine in the hot vee.
This 2,992cc engine is paired with a modified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission gearbox used in the SF90 Straddle to deliver more exciting operation by clipping early gears.
The entire hybrid system has been developed to lower the center of gravity as much as possible by placing the battery in a very low position and creating a flatter engine than usual with which to bring its position closer to the ground and improve dynamic behavior.
Its figures are 663 hp, to which must be added the assistance of the 122 kW (167 hp) electric motor and up to 315 Nm, which working together give a total figure of 830 hp and 740 Nm of torque. The MGU-K electric motor is integrated between the engine and the gearbox and joins the party through a dedicated clutch.
This electric motor is powered by a 7.45 kWh lithium-ion battery with which it can travel up to 25 km in 100% electric mode, so it would not achieve the DGT’s ZERO environmental label.
Speaking of performance, the Italian brand announces an acceleration of 2.9 s for the 0-100 km / h, 7.3 seconds for the 0-200 km / h and they claim to have the best power/weight ratio in their history with a figure of 1.77 kg / CV. The lap time set at Fiorino is 1:21 minutes, three seconds behind the SF90 Stradale.
The weights are 22 kg for the electric motor, 77 kg for the batteries (2 kg less than in the SF90 Stradale, because it has fewer cells), and 185 kg for the motor block. The 296 GTB advertises a weight of 1,470 kg, which is 100 kg below the SF90 Stradale.
Sound is one of the main characteristics in a Ferrari and the engineers have sought to achieve an auditory impact in line with what is expected of the brand. The works have focused on the final section of the exhaust to the frequency of the waves that are created in the catalyst.
The new Ferrari 296 GTB will hit the market in the first quarter of 2022 at an estimated price of 269,000 euros before taxes in Italy.
