The 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 and track-attack GT3 RS are, in a word, transcendental; they combine the best qualities of the regular 911 with extraordinary speed, faultless handling, and the potential to turn in blistering lap times. The GT3 and GT3 Touring are powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine that emits demonic noises when it revs to its 9000 rpm redline and generates 502 horsepower. To produce 518 horsepower, the same engine is used in the new GT3 RS, but the model’s biggest technical improvements are found in its extreme racing-car aerodynamic features, many of which are directly lifted from GT and Formula 1 race cars. The normal transmission in the GT3 is a six-speed manual, but we’ve shown that the optional PDK automatic transmission is faster since it shifts more quickly than a human and seems to be connected to the brain. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is available with the optional PDK transmission only. Although the GT3 and GT3 Touring were developed to provide exhilarating performance on the world’s most demanding racing tracks, they are virtually as comfortable and practical around town as the standard 911. Because of its versatility, the GT3 is not only among our favorite sports cars but also deserves a spot among the most revered icons of the automobile industry. However, the GT3 RS takes lap times as seriously as a 911 can while still being street legal. Can’t wait to get behind the wheel and find out whether it’s too extreme for anything except the track.
This year sees the introduction of the GT3 RS, the range-topping model that has a large rear wing, a race-car aerodynamic package, and a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine that produces 518 horsepower. We anticipate the GT3 RS to reach 60 mph in under 3.0 seconds once we get our hands on it at our testing center; it looks amazing, like a racing vehicle straight out of a video game.
In keeping with the previous generation, Porsche provides two variants of the “regular” GT3: the basic winged model and a Touring variation that dials down the racy appearance by removing the large rear wing. The RS is the most extreme GT3 model available. They’re all fantastic vehicles, but the GT3 RS has our undying love.
The 911 GT3 is powered by a 4.0-liter flat-six engine that is naturally aspirated and generates 502 horsepower and is located in the trunk. Similar to the previous 911 Speedster we drove, this one too has an engine capable of revving to 9000 rpm while emitting a captivating howl. The GT3 is available with either a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (PDK) or a six-speed manual. Our PDK-equipped test vehicle demonstrated not just the automatic’s smooth operation, but also the engine’s lively reflexes and hypnotic audio. Our automatic car reached 60 mph in 2.7 seconds on the test track, while the six-speed manual vehicle reached that pace in an outstanding 3.3 seconds. This year’s addition to the lineup, the GT3 RS, features 518 horsepower and a plethora of aerodynamic elements that generate massive downforce, allowing the car to stay planted on the road. This includes a ridiculous rear wing that incorporates a drag-reduction system reminiscent of those found on Formula 1 race cars. When we get a chance to run it through our instrumented test procedure, we will update this account. It is the first production 911 to include a control-arm front suspension, which is the single most important performance increase on the newest generation of GT3 vehicles. When coupled with the coupe’s standard adaptive dampers and the available Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Cup R tyres, the chassis offers exceptional cornering grip and unadulterated input. The GT3 has a strong, but never harsh, ride, and its electrically assisted steering is so incredibly responsive that it should be crowned the finest in the industry. We’ll find out whether the RS’s increased stiffness for the racing track makes it an unpleasant ride on the street. Massive steel binders stop the Porsches of purists, while the carbon-ceramic alternative offers heroic braking force, simple modulation, and fade resistance on the track.
When fitted with an automatic gearbox, the 911 GT3 has been rated by the EPA at 15 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. The city MPG lowers to 14 if you opt for the manual gearbox. We can’t provide an accurate assessment of its real-world mpg until we have the chance to test it on our highway fuel efficiency route at 75 miles per hour.
The GT3’s cabin is styled and laid out similarly to the rest of Porsche’s 911 models, paying respect to the original versions of the brand’s iconic sports vehicle. There are, however, a few interesting touches tucked away throughout the cottage. As before, the GT3’s instrument cluster is centered on a large analog tachometer with digital displays on each side, but a new GT mode moves all relevant data to the outside displays. Adjusting the rebound and compression of the adaptive dampers is made easier in the RS model thanks to new buttons on the steering wheel. In addition, the PDK automatic gearbox swaps out the short center-console shifter of standard 911s with a longer, more conventional lever that looks like it belongs in a manual transmission. No human passengers will have to endure the roar of the engine in the tight backseat of this GT3, which is identical to the one in the previous generation. A set of lightweight buckets, designed to decrease bulk and boost support, is available as an option for the front seats of a Porsche.
The GT3 variant of the 911 shares its infotainment system with the standard 911. The dashboard is dominated by a 10.9-inch touchscreen, with additional controls located on the steering wheel and console. Wi-Fi and wireless Apple CarPlay are also available in the Porsche. A Bose sound system is available as an upgrade, too.
