Gordon Murray T.50 – supercar in the style of McLaren F1 from the legendary designer
Gordon Murray partially revealed the design and technical specifications of the Gordon Murray T.50 supercar, which will premiere in May next year. The main “feature” of this machine will be a 400-millimeter fan in the stern, creating a ground effect under the bottom.
Russian motorists Gordon Murray is best known as the creator of the iconic supercar McLaren F1, the fastest road car of the 90s, and in his homeland in the UK, Murray is also remembered and honored as a talented formula designer who worked in the Brabham and McLaren teams. It was he who in the late 70s invented for one of the modifications of the Formula 1 Brabham BT46 car a large fan behind the pilot’s back, which sucked air from under the bottom and thus pressed the car to the ground, increasing the traction of the wheels with asphalt – cornering could be made faster. Because of this fan, the car instantly received the nickname “vacuum cleaner”, but protests by other teams against this innovative technology soon forced the Brabham team to abandon the fan.
In 2007, Murray, after working with the “civilian” division of McLaren, founded his own engineering company Gordon Murray Design, which relied on the so-called cheap carbon fiber in the body structure. The technology, called iStream, has interested many partners, but in the serial form, it can only be seen on the new generation TVR Griffith, but, for example, Yamaha refused the idea of producing cars according to Murray’s recipes.
In 2017, the British designer decided to establish his own automobile company – Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA), in order to finally realize all his ideas. At first, he planned to release a relatively affordable T.43 sports car with a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline turbo engine, but then he wisely switched to the more expensive T.50 ultra-luxury segment project – the demand for such cars (as opposed to the demand for “cheap “Sports cars) is growing now, and Murray is quite capable of staking out a place for himself in this exclusive market.
Gordon Murray T.50 will be released in a circulation of 100 copies worth more than 2 million pounds each. Murray claims that most of the cars have already been sold, although the official presentation will take place only in May next year, and the first finished copies will be shipped to customers only in January 2022.
T.50 is a mid-engined supercar with a carbon fiber monocoque based. In the only officially published photograph, it is not difficult to discern the features of the McLaren F1. In terms of the landing formula, Murray also remained true to himself: 1 + 2, that is, the driver is sitting in the front in the center, and two passengers are slightly behind and on the sides of the pilot.
In terms of the basic hardware, nothing revolutionary. Suspension – on double wishbones “in a circle” (apparently, passive). The engine is a 3.9-liter “aspirated” V12 from Cosworth (659 hp, 450 Nm), capable of spinning up to 12,100 rpm. A 30-horsepower 48-volt starter-generator is connected to the crankshaft (that is, the Gordon Murray T.50 is a soft hybrid). The technology of the so-called high-speed boost due to the air rushing into the car gives another small increase in power, and thus the maximum total power of the supercar reaches 710 hp. Transmission – 6-speed manual. Dynamic characteristics have not yet been announced. The declared mass of the car is 980 kg.
Against the background of other ultra-expensive projects, the Gordon Murray T.50 will stand out with its unique body aerodynamics, which Murray developed together with the formula team Racing Point Formula One Team (formerly Force India). A 400-millimeter fan installed vertically in the stern pumps out air from under the bottom and drives it through the cooling system of the power unit (that is, the idea of forty years ago was given a new embodiment). Active aerodynamic dampers inside the body control the volume of air passing through the machine depending on speed and lateral overloads, providing optimal traction of the wheels with the road.
The unique aerodynamic system made it possible to abandon the developed external plumage of the body and wing, and the design due to this turned out to be as concise as possible. The system has six operating modes. Two of them are automatic (for acceleration and braking), in which the electronics themselves select the position of the aerodynamic dampers. The other three modes are fixed. High Downforce provides maximum downforce, Streamline Mode – maximum efficiency, Vmax Mode – maximum speed. Finally, Test Mode is the so-called demo mode, which allows you to move the shutters in the parking lot and boast unique equipment to your friends.
I want to believe that T.50 is not the last project of the 73-year-old designer, and his talent will still find the application. At the end of last year, Murray for his services in the automotive industry received the Order of the Commander of the British Empire. This, of course, is very honorable, but the highest recognition of his merits would be a knighthood, and, quite possibly, after the release of Gordon Murray T.50, Sir will still receive the prefix Sir in his name.
