After three quick laps on the Austin / Texas Formula 1 circuit, however, that this could be the almost only problem with the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 (2018). At most, the empty weight of over two tons is a little in the way of the lightning-fast power coupé in the fast change curves three to six. In front of us, DTM legend Bernd Schneider lays a scalpel-sharp ideal line in the 400-kilogram lighter AMG GT R on semi-slicks, while in the GT 4-door with tires we have to scratch quite a bit at the vertices and turning points to get the load into the next corner to get. But that also happens at an absurd pace – and somehow still completely neutral. The rest of the course is really enjoyable: powerful acceleration with deep AMG V8 bass, barely noticeable through-loading automatic nine-speed, ultra-stable in the fast corners and when braking hard. The carbon-ceramic brakes have a sovereign and easily controllable grip on the car when the driver turns in, the Mercedes is there immediately, reacts sensitively and without the delay that would be assumed for such a concept. The new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 (2018) can be steered wonderfully openly with the accelerator pedal in the dynamic driving modes of the AMG Dynamic Select driving dynamics program, which can be controlled by the rotary control on the steering wheel; when accelerating out, the traction is directly ready and relentless. Tobias Moers stands in the pit lane and is happy: “We didn’t want to build a fast coupé, but a real sports car – which just has four doors and space for luggage and up to five passengers. We take the old SLS AMG with the GT 4-door on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife a good ten seconds. “And the Panamera? “Moers grins:” Panamera? NEW GT 63 (2018) IS BASED ON THE CLS
So far, the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 (2018) is doing solidly in the test drive. Two and a half hours later we are back and still fresh enough to do the same lap in the more economical motorized GT 53 with a boosted three-liter inline six-cylinder (435 hp). Conclusion in the evening: If you don’t have the ultimate driving dynamics fist on your neck, you should also enjoy the GT 4-door as a 53er. Probably even in the entry-level version GT 43 (367 PS). In the end we are disappointed. This is because the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 (2018) is not equipped with the new MBUX infotainment system like the current A-Class or the new Sprinter. Instead, the principle is that it functions properly, but in terms of connectivity and functional depth, the outdated system from the E- and C-Class is used and, on top of that, it is coupled with an artificial and imprecise touchpad operation. So to say it with an MBUX voice command: “Hey, Mercedes, we would like to have the GT with MBUX in the future – or at least with a tried and tested rotary pushbutton.
