The 718 GTS makes your heart race
Thanks to the increased power to 400 hp, the GTS runs a little faster than before and tops 293 km / h. Zero to 100 km / h? 4.5 seconds (old: 4.9 s).
With the six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine from the GT4, the new Porsche 718 GTS 4.0 (2020) radiates even more fascination – and gets the fans going. First test drive!
The new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 (2020)- here for the first test drive – should reassure some: Not all Porsche customers were enthusiastic about the idea of equipping the models in the 718 series with four-cylinder boxer engines. From a factual point of view, there is little to complain about in turbo engines. But especially from the emphatically dynamic GTS, fans wanted more sound, more kick, and more esprit. After the debut of the newly developed six-cylinder in the 718 GT4 / Spyder, the Zuffenhausen-based company is now replacing the 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo with 365 hp with the 4.0-liter six-cylinder vacuum cleaner. Thanks to the increased power to 400 hp, the new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 (2020) runs a little faster than before and tops 293 km / h. Zero to 100 km / h? 4.5 seconds (old: 4.9 s). The maximum torque, however, remains unchanged at 420 Newton meters, is now only available from 5000 tours, while the four-cylinder turbo was already in full juice from 2100 tours. Accordingly, the six-cylinder demands more shift work and higher engine speeds. The drivability of the previous four-cylinder turbo was de facto better, but the vacuum cleaner made up for it with almost linear power delivery across the entire rev range, immediate throttle response, pronounced joy of turning and excellent sound.
FIRST TEST DRIVE WITH THE NEW PORSCHE 718 CAYMAN GTS 4.0 (2020)
In direct comparison to the predecessor, the new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 (2020) also weighs 30 kilograms more, of which a good ten kilograms are accounted for by the new drive: add the two additional cylinders and the two-cylinder exhaust manifold, each with a particle filter to an additional weight of 13.9 kg. A lighter two-mass flywheel and the modified tubing on the transmission cooling of the 4.0 are 3.2 kg lighter. Resulting in additional weight: almost eleven kilograms. The further reinforced brake system with larger disc diameters (350 instead of 330 mm at the front, 330 instead of 299 mm at the rear), other axles and a modified brake booster lift the curb weight by a further 14 kg, details in the body and electronics weigh around five kg more. In the end, the empty weight of the GTS climbs to 1405 kilograms. You don’t feel a single gram of it when driving. On the contrary. The now lowered vehicle level by 20 millimeters (predecessor minus 10 mm) allows the new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 (2020) to react a little more swiftly to steering commands during our first test drive and, in combination with the fantastically spontaneous response behavior of the vacuum cleaner, allows an even more intuitive and more precise dosing of steering angle and power with forced cornering.
NEW 718 CAYMAN GTS 4.0 (2020) INCREDIBLY DYNAMIC
On the country road, however, you hardly have a chance to push the new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 (2020) (legally) to its limit. This requires a circuit – and the GTS deserves it. Only there can he show on the first test drive what he’s made of, how incredibly good the traction of the mid-engine coupe is, how reliably the six-piston pliers (rear: four pistons) grab, how immensely the grip level of the tires is – in short: how incredibly dynamic the Cayman can be moved. All this is accompanied by the thrilling sound spectacle that makes the free-sucking six-cylinder so indispensable for the fans. You are right. In addition, the GTS 4.0 looks chic. Attachments on the front and rear, LED headlights, lettering, wheels, headlining: The color black sets the right accents and makes the new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 (2020) appear even more dynamic than the four-cylinder models (Cayman, S, and T) of the series, comforting the basic price of 81,926 euros. The open-air variant Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 is even more expensive. The Roadster benefits from the same modifications and is on the list at 83,949 euros. By the way: At the moment the last examples of the 718 GTS with a 2.5-liter turbo engine are still sold at prices starting at 78,356 euros – hardly slower and around one liter more economical.
